Mounted Tournament at Herstmonceux Castle

Contrary to popular belief, Chivalry is not dead !

The royal court has arrived and taken their places, the trumpets are sounding, and all is in readiness... hold onto your turkey legs, the action is about to begin!

Not for centuries on English soil has the possibility been presented for open attendance for re-enactors in a medieval tournament. Not just theatre on horseback, imagine competing in a contest of medieval games, with actual scoring presenting the opportunity to establish who is "Le Bon Chevalier" in England!

The three daily tournaments comprise a number of authentic games played in medieval times as part of the Knight's and squire's training and repeated at tournaments and "behold" style contests.

Many sports originated as exercises in preparation for combat. Conversely various sports started as some form of warfare and have mutated into sport.

The Duke of Wellington is well-known for saying that "the Battle of Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Eton ".

Thankfully the horse is no longer needed for war.  The disciplines required for combat however have become an International sport.

Over the centuries little has changed in the skills required by a cavalryman.  At England's Medieval Festival you will see a mounted skill-at-arms competition that is broadly based on International Rules but with a distinctly medieval character all of its own.  It is hoped, as years go by, to encourage more foreign competitors to take part and to make it a truly International Competition, the highlight of Britain 's all too short mounted skill-at-arms season.
